Horse Betting Basics
Betting at the race track can be confusing!
If you want to win betting on the horses, yet are not sure how to bet, refer to the
quick tips below about how to place your bet and the lingo you’ll need to
do it. Here is everything you need to know to place a bet on the
horses at the race track. Once you understand the horse betting
basics, it will be much less confusing!
To place your bet
- State the AMOUNT of the bet.
- State the TYPE of bet.
- State the NUMBER(S) of your selection(s) i.e. which horse(s) you want to bet on.
(The number of the horse you’re placing a bet
on will be displayed in the official program which you can purchase at the
race track or at other venues where horse betting is available).
If you’re not sure what type of horse race bet to place,
this handy chart below can help you!
- Win: Horse must finish 1st.
- Place: Horse must finish 1st or 2nd.
- Show: Horse must finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
Across the Board: Equal bets to win, place and
show on a single horse. For example, if you say "$2 across the board"
you will be betting a total of $6 on the race horse you select.
Daily Double: Select the winners of two
consecutive races.
Exacta: Select the horses that finish first
and second in exact order. The Exacta payoff is generally the Win
payoff times the Place payoff of the second place horse.
Quinella: Select the horses that finish first
and second in any order.
Trifecta: Select the first three horses in the
exact order. The Trifecta payoff is generally the Win payoff times the
Place payoff times the show Payoff.
Superfecta: Select the first four horses in
exact order.
Pick 3: Select the winners of three
consecutive races.
Pick 4: Select the winners of four consecutive
races.
Pick 6: Select the winners of six consecutive
races.
Parlay: Combine at least two races up to a
maximum of six horse races, consecutive or non-consecutive, using Win,
Place, or Show bets on a parlay betting slip. You collect
only if all of selections win.
